Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate announced Tuesday his endorsement of Supreme Court Justice Sarah Stewart in her campaign to serve as Alabama’s next Chief Justice.
“I wholeheartedly endorse Justice Sarah Stewart for Chief Justice,” Pate stated. “I met Sarah campaigning in 2017 and immediately liked her. She had an openness to her and a caring attitude that has made us good friends. I believe Sarah would always be fair and protect our rural and agricultural rights.”
Justice Stewart has an eighteen-year record as a conservative Republican judge. She has served as an Associate Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court since she was elected as a Republican in 2018. Prior to her election, Justice Stewart was a Circuit Judge in Mobile County, where she handled over 1,800 criminal and civil cases per year. Justice Stewart was appointed Circuit Judge by Governor Bob Riley in January 2006 and was elected as a Republican without opposition in November 2006, 2010 and 2016.
“I am grateful for the support and endorsement of Commissioner Rick Pate,” Justice Stewart said. “As I have traveled our state on the campaign trail, I’ve assured voters that I will continue to fiercely safeguard our freedoms enshrined in the Constitution – from the right to praise God freely to the power of state government. I will join Commissioner Pate in his efforts to defend our farmers and rural Alabama.”
Justice Stewart earned her J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School in 1992. She earned her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Arkansas. She is married to Craig Richard Stewart, originally of Selma. They have two children and are members of Ashland Place Methodist Church.
